Criticism is mounting over the administration of the parole system following the early release of high-profile inmates, with academics calling for changes to make the parole system more transparent. Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya has weighed in, instructing authorities to show why some offenders are given parole to help increase transparency and accountability in parole decisions. The prosecution, the public and the media will have access to the court process. However, a prison commander, who asked not to be named, has defended the parole system and the consideration process, saying it is based on strict criteria and legal requirements. Thanee Vorpata, director of the legal research and development centre at faculty of law at Dhurakij Pundit University, has echoed calls to overhaul the parole system.
